THE FINISH LINE
Rowhhome
Made up of Cätschi Streit, Meike Ramuschkat, Steffi Kluge and Timna Bicker, RowHHome is an all-female German rowing team who will be tackling the 2019 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The exhilarating race, which starts from the rugged coastline of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, involves rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. There’s no doubt it’s an ambitious task – especially as the team will be challenged to endure the rough seas and unpredictable elements on their way to the finish line in Antigua.

“What I like most about nature is you can really forget about everything”
“They will no doubt inspire other adventurous women”
Always on the hunt for the next adventure that will test their strength and endurance, the team has had this wild experience of a lifetime on their radar for a while. When Cätschi watched the documentary Four Mums in a Boat, which tells the remarkable story of four working mums from Yorkshire who took on the challenge in 2016, she was intrigued. And when Meike ‘accidentally’ found her way to the starting line of the race in December 2017, it became clear that there were too many signs to ignore.
Between the four women, they have finished the Ironman 70.3, climbed Kilimanjaro, completed marathons and triathlons and participated in the European Rowing Championships and World Rowing Masters Regatta – an impressive roster highlighting their joint love for connecting with nature and pushing themselves to their limits. “What I like most about nature is you can really forget about everything that happens during your daily life, and you can let your thoughts flow,” says Meike. Through their adventures, the team also quash the idea that their gender is a barrier to success, particularly within historically male-dominated sports that hinge on endurance. Alongside the thrill of a new boundary-testing undertaking, Cätschi, Meike, Steffi and Timna are motivated by the fact that they will no doubt inspire other adventurous women, demonstrating what is possible. “I think we will learn a lot of things for life,” notes Cätschi. “I think the nice part is also that maybe then I can be a role model for other people, and show them when you have a dream, just fight for it and you will reach it.”
Made up of Cätschi Streit, Meike Ramuschkat, Steffi Kluge and Timna Bicker, the Germanrowing team will be taking part in the 2019 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, widelyrecognised as “the world’s toughest row” across the Atlantic Ocean.

“THERE’S A NATURAL BROTHERHOOD AND SHARED EXPERIENCE THAT MADE IT A NATURAL FIT”
EPISODE 02
“DESPITE NOT KNOWING ONE ANOTHER BEFOREHAND, AN EASY KINSHIP EMERGED BETWEEN THE FOUR”

“There’s a natural brotherhood and shared experience that made it a natural fit”
A year later, the Denver native found himself leading the 2019 team, made up of himself; Carl Christensen, a former US Navy marine from Wyoming; Luke Holton, a former US Army technician living in Alaska; and John Fannin, a former Marine based near San Antonio. The four will row 3,000 miles (nearly 5,000 kilometres) from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to the Caribbean island of Antigua, a huge undertaking for a team who had never met before they were brought together for the challenge.
Around the time former US Marine Evan Stratton was discovering he missed the camaraderie he’d found in the service, he attended a fundraising gala in 2018 – and his life took a new course. He heard the story of Fight Oar Die – an all-American, all-military-veteran rowing team that competes in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge annually. “I’m hearing about these four veterans who are going to get in a boat and row the Atlantic Ocean. My eyes lit up, like yes, I want to do this.”
“I got introduced to them through a text message,” says Stratton. “And then we spent the next few weeks, about once a week, getting on Skype phone calls.” Despite their not knowing one another beforehand, he found that an easy kinship emerged between the four: “Just like [with] all veterans, there’s a natural brotherhood, friendship and shared experience that made it all a natural fit.”
“Despite not knowing one anotheR beforehand, an easy kinship emerged between the four”
In addition to their shared experience of being veterans, all four also have an affinity for the natural world, whether as a result of their military service or, like Stratton, due to their upbringing. “I was raised outside,” says the former Marine. “Grew up in Denver, Colorado, an hour's drive from some of the most majestic peaks in force in the world. I’ve spent a lot of time in those mountains, but I’ve really not had a ton of experience out on the ocean, so I’m really excited to get this true experience out on the water for an extended period of time.”
